In my previous post, I highlighted the importance of getting rid of the fear of going to events by yourself. I would say that as a lover of music, I’ve been practising this for the last year now and I benefit from the experience every single time.
Whether it's meeting new people, networking, or simply just enjoying the event overall.
Anyway, let me put this particular story into perspective for you.
My post notifications for my favourite artists are usually on, just so I don’t miss any important announcements. This particular day @vennagram popped up on Instagram live for a few minutes, and he mentioned that he would be supporting Yussef Dayes in London, at Somerset house the following weekend.
Personally, I think that anything that Venna is apart of is bound to be great.
But I had my reservations at first because I had never heard of Yussef Dayes prior, so I took the opportunity to do my research and I was quite impressed with what I heard.
I gave myself a week to decide whether or not the event was worth going to.
Saturday morning came and luckily there were still tickets available. Still had my doubts, as I was unsure if I would enjoy the event especially because I had no prior knowledge of some of the acts performing.
Eventually I took the risk with a friend and decided to purchase a ticket. The weather was perfect , I could leave my house without a jacket,no makeup and a pair of platform crocs.
Upon entering the venue, my friend and I decided to share a bottle of wine to set the mood for the afternoon/evening. We’d missed Jamilah Barry’s performance which was disappointing but nonetheless, the vibe was still quite good.
I had the pleasure of listening to Children of Zues’s “Hard Work” while enjoying the warm rays of the sun on a Saturday evening. This was the second time I’d seen the Manchester born duo live in concert as I was introduced to their music at Strawberries and Creem earlier this year.
They performed some fan favourites including “No love song” and shortly after, Channel One graced the stage and provided the crowd with their reggae sounds.
One thing that stood out to me was the diversity of the crowd. It was interesting to see all the different types of people that these amazing acts brought out.
Eventually the sun began to set, the lights came down and the musicians we all came to see entered stage left, one by one.
Bassist Rocco Palladino, Elijah Fox on the keys, Malik Venner on the sax and of course Yussef Dayes on the drums.
This show was very special because it was different from anything I had ever attended, seen or heard. I’m used to your typical live concert. This time the musicians were relying solely on their instruments and each other to produce a performance of high quality.
The quartette of musicians took over the evening with a combination of beautiful sounds, including the very popular “Yesterday Princess”.
It was one of those moments you don’t want to end, So of course, I recorded some footage on my camera because I for sure wanted to experience this feeling again even if it was from my phone.
Listening to music at home or on a journey will never compare to the feeling of joy you get from attending a live show, experiencing the theatrics, the good vibes and the interaction between the audience and the musicians... All of these things combined make a live experience so much more than listening to music through your earphones, almost like a spiritual experience.
I’d rate the show a strong 9/10. Easily my favourite show this year.
